What exactly is a “doodle” dog?
Doodles are considered an intentional hybrid.  A Labradoodle is a
cross between a Registered Labrador and a registered Poodle.  A
Cockerdoodle (or Cockapoo) is a cross between a registered
Cocker Spaniel and a registered Poodle.  A Goldendoodle is a cross
between a registered Golden Retriever and a registered Poodle.
The Labradoodle is the oldest of the intentional hybrid dogs.  They
have been around for more than 20 years.
Originally, people began crossing purebred dogs with purebred
Poodles because they were looking for dogs that might be more
allergy friendly and less prone to shedding.  While a doodle is not
necessarily going to be allergy friendly (even Poodles are not 100%
hypoallergenic) they can be easier on some people with the
tendency towards allergies.  They can also be less likely to shed.
Basically, doodles are very intelligent dogs.  They tend to take the
best trait from each of the purebreds that they are bred from and
they are a lot less likely to develop the health problems that are
inherently found within each of their purebred parents.
According to The International Doodle Owners Group, one of the
reasons that doodles were first bred was to help people in need.
Doodles are used as service dogs for the disabled, therapy dogs for
the sick, elderly and homeless, and they are wonderfully athletic
dogs.  Doodles participate in obedience trials and agility
competitions.  They also make great hunting companions.  Doodles
are highly trainable and can adapt to almost any lifestyle.  Doodles
have also managed, due in fact to their natural grace and beauty,
to find their way in magazines and on TV.  They thrive on learning
and make wonderful lifelong companions.
As with any other type of dog, doodles have specific health and
grooming requirements.  We encourage anyone that is thinking
about adopting a doodle to research and make sure that they are
truly prepared for what it takes to maintain a doodle in the manner
that will be best for it.  If you would like any more information on
grooming, feeding, training, or maintaining a health schedule for
your doodle, please ask.  We want to help make every one of our
puppy’s futures as secure, happy, and healthy as possible.
